National Honor Society

Character Scholarship Service Leadership

Greenwood Community High School students are invited to apply for National Honor Society membership at the beginning of the junior year. In September, the selection committee will send invitations to all juniors and seniors who have weighted GPAs of 3.65 or higher. These students must complete their applications and return them with teacher recommendations as well as required documentation of community service and/or volunteer hours and school activities.

A selection committee of teachers evaluates applications with student names removed to ensure fair evaluation. The panel will look for well-rounded individuals with no set minimum requirements for service hours or school activities; however, the panel will want to see that applicants have been actively involved in their schools and communities. Please remember that a high GPA is not the only criteria for membership. Students who are accepted during the junior year will also be members during the senior year, providing those students still meet membership criteria.

After students are accepted into National Honor Society, they are invited to the Induction Ceremony. The ceremony will be held one evening in late October or November. This ceremony is designed as a celebration for both students and parents.

Following induction, students must continue to fulfill their NHS requirements. They must maintain a 3.65 GPA, continue to be involved in school activities, and earn 25 service hours per semester. Students must also remember that character is a requirement and that any questionable behavior many result in removal from NHS. In addition, students must attend NHS meetings. Students who miss two meetings or fail to fulfill other requirements will be put on probation for one semester. Students who fail to regain NHS status or fall beneath guidelines will be removed from NHS.

Anyone with questions should contact Alison Bonham, NHS Sponsor, at 889-4030 ext. 415.

Invitations to join NHS
Invitations will go out to juniors and seniors who meet the NHS GPA requirement by September 30th.  The invitation will have instructions for a meeting which prospective candidates must attend.  The Induction Ceremony will be held in November.  If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Bonham, C-110.

Meetings
Our meetings will be on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month (unless members vote for a different schedule).  Our first meeting will be September 9th at 7:00 in Mrs. Bonham's room, C-110.  We will discuss plans for the year on that date, so if you have any ideas please talk to your officers or Mrs. Bonham before the 11th.  Please remember, your attendance is necessary.  Members who fail to attend meetings will be put on probation.  Please refer to our By-laws.
